Due to the completely frantic nature of Festival work and, FIDDLESTICKS work (festival work by extension), and warehouse-for-money work, Synapse 4 continues to plod on at an all-but nonexistent pace. (BARM is moving more quickly but has a few weeks yet.) However, here's a bit of an appetizer, Aaron's cover for Synapse 4's eventual sound supplement.

Anti-Inquest?

Since virtually none of us knows what the fuck Post-Neo really is (especially myself), what if we launch an investigation over the course of the Anti-Festival, each week a committee could volunteer or something to gather evidence in the form of testimonials, inquests, evidence from the Post-Neo archive (a couple thousand pieces of ephemera, work, and relics), séances, crazy oral myths with questionable origins, Post-Neo artwork and publications, random tangents introduced for no tangible reason whatsoever; and then publish our findings, however ambiguous and nonsensnsical, after the festival for our collective Anti-elucidation?

(in practice this could easily mean passing a video camera around for interviews while we hang out sometime and passing around archive folders in the living room; or could be something more grand and whimsical; whatever people would feel like doing.)

Yes? No? Maybe? eh?

Two Poems by Imogene Engine

The second half of the second event on Saturday night (8:00 at our place...) consists of my reading of poems by Imogene Engine, seminal Post-Neo poet and one of my closest friends. As a kind of appetizer, here are two of her poems first published in the Appropriated Press (the first Post-Neo journal, which ran from A.Da. 87-89 (2003-2005). You may have a copy of her recent chapbook The Iuk Kide, if not we'll be printing up a third run soon, and it will be available for free online very soon.

Hector! O Hector!

Just a reminder that if you're coming to the Familiars' Hospital session on Saturday at 5, you can bring materials that might be of service. Since all of the accidents, we've had to assemble this very suddenly, and have jobs and no cars, so we'll only have what we can find at C.H. Martin and the Closeout Corner.

In particular, Hector's tail appears to have been lost, and there's a hole ready for some purpose (come on, now); people have suggested a horn but I don't know if we can find something on such short notice; he also has a chunk taken out of his rump that something might be done with.

The rubber chicken has its front split open; we could save herim simply by applying Household Goop to the wound, but there may be less obvious solutions as well.

Thankfully, we did manage to save Miss Rickett's tongue; and since it was on ice, it can still be reattached.

Also if anyone has Household Goop (TM); Plumbing Goop (TM) would do alright in a pinch I GUESS but a word to the wise: nothing bonds rubber flesh like Household Goop (TM), I've learned from experience.

We do plan to have face masks for everyone so that none of the ailing familiars contracts anything (at least through the nose).

Here are some close-ups of Hector's damage:

The House! 131 BAYARD!

It looks like we have a house! Behold! 131 Bayard St.- the new great hall for all JerseyPost-Neo affairs. Olchar Lindsann, Tomislav Butkovic and I have signed a lease and will move in on June 1st. It's a five minute walk from the NJTransit Railway Station (a 40 minute ride into New York City from there), two blocks from the Mason Gross Building CSB (home of Lost and Found Gallery and Rutger's MFA and BFA programs), and strategically located right next to downtown New Brunswick with all its shops, bars, and restaurants.

We are renting the entire house, which means that there will be no non-anti-art friendly house-mates. It has a large living room, a large dinning room which will serve as our gallery and performance space, and many other exciting features: a shed around the back, a blank billboard not 20 feet from the front door, multiple entrance and exit points, a strange and dungeon-ish basement, a half bath on the first floor, and as an added bonus there are no houses on either side of the property- meaning we can probably get away with a bit of noise! This will have to be tested before we go whole-hog however. It's also right next to the train tracks, which come roughly every half hour; we're already scheming towards incorporating the train schedule into performances. This is a huge increase in space for us and the rent is manageable. The living room provides us with enough room for people to crash- we'll have couches and lazy-boys and plenty of floor space.

A Bedroom

The Living Room

Another Living Room Shot

Upstairs Bathroom

Oh, the possibilities!

Although the basement's low ceiling (not to mention all the strewn rubble) make it to a bad fit for sustained performances or cabarets, its ideal for short exchanges and episodes within larger events: Meat Poems!?

Some exterior shots should be on the Blog soon so you can get a better idea of what we-your in for! This is a four bedroom and we are in contact with a few potential room-mates who would be wonderful additions to the new home of New Jersey Post-Neo.

Its been a whirlwind couple of days, Olchar and I have been up till 2 in the morning making fliers and adds for Fiddlesticks II, gathering supplies for the Silent Soiree and Imogene Engine reading, and hatching plots with friends- and then up again every morning at 6 for work! Exhaustingly essential efforts towards what promises to be an amazing festival!

I'm off to make some noise recordings with Tomislav, Olchar, and Chris Lennard (who's crashing with his band the Argonauts at our place this week). VIM VOM SHIRT!

FIDDLESTICKS #2, EVENT #1: IT'S VERY HARD TO TELL YOU THIS...

Soon we'll post photos and reports of BOSCH ON ICE; but in the meantime... well...

Sit down.

We TOLD Hector Clam not to attend Bosch on Ice. "You'll get hurt," we said. But he insisted. It is such a major event for the New Brunswick community who have collectively raised me, he argued, that I must be a part of it, how could I not be involved? Especially with the Professor and Miss Ricketts going, and even the two rubber chickens who don't have names! We reminded him that they were made of tough rubber (though that didn't stop one of those rubber chickens from getting slashed from throat to gullet!). "After all, the Comptroller and Bill Murray were staying home!" But you forget, he countered, that my first appearance was at the first Brutesthletics game, four days after Olchar arrived in town, as everyone was buying props at the thrift store! I must come! I owe it to all of my beloved Brunswites!

Well.

Someone--there are conflicting reports as to whom--got hold of Hector Clam. Over and over again he careened into the ice like Icarus dropping onto a frozen ocean. In the end he was split in half, and a part of his flank caved in--

BUT NEVER FEAR--

Reid Bingham led us all in an emergency triage operating--Hector was bound together again by a rubber snake (caduceus?) wound round his waist, and a donkey-puppet pulled over his head like a hood-mask to hold his skull together (and to protect him from the sight of his own temporary dismemberment). Hector Clam is still among the living! But like the Professor, the Comptroller, Miss Ricketts (whose tongue was torn out and who has sprung a leak), Bill Murray (who no longer sings and dances), and the unfortunate unnamed rubber chicken who was torn apart while being used as a drum stick by Tsubasa during the climax of Bosch on Ice, Hector is certainly worse for wear.

Before (above) and After (below)

This is why we are convening an emergency Anti-Surgery THIS SATURDAY at 5:00 PM at the LOST & FOUND GALLERY at the opening of the 2nd FIDDLESTICKS installment. In addition to Angee Lennard (Chicago) and Alan Reed (Montreal), this show features Tsubasa Berg and Charlotte Whalen, both of whom have been Hector's roomates and foster-parents during his formative years.

Hector Clam will require some heavy reconstructive surgery, so it's been suggested that perhaps we might provide him with a form even more befitting of his grandeur; hasn't it always seemed like he might have a unicorn's horn? a __(noun)___? an etc.?

So come visit, see what these four have done with the gallery, and bring along some ideas or materials as all of us work together to repair and comfort our rubber friends and RESURRECT HECTOR CLAM!

And then, after a break for eating or otherwise refreshing, meet us AGAIN at our place at 221 Howard St., floor 3 (enter through the rear) at 8:00 PM for a Silent Soiree culminating in poems by Imogene Engine--more information below!

FIDDLESTICKS #2, EVENT #2: SSSHHHH!!! Silent Soiree & Imogene Engine

After Hector Clam and the rest have been patched back together with love, join them and us again a couple hours later at our place (221 Howard, third floor, rear door) at 8:00 PM for an evening of Silence and Speech--

There, we will begin by hosting a SILENT SOIREE; yes, as silent as it is possible for us all to be while writing moving cutting exquisite-corpsing drinking gluing gesturing.
NO noisemakers
NO typewriters
NO talking
NO shouting
NO stomping
NO whispering
NO music
NO banging
NO INTENTIONAL NOISE OF ANY KIND.

That's right, we will live like mimes.
What will an Anti-Soiree be without the noise?
What will we do without horns and clackers?!
What will be left when the uproar vanishes?
WHAT WILL FILL THE VOID ?!

the disappearance of Imogene Engine.

When the silence is finally broken, it will be an absent person. The words of the poems of Imogene Engine shall be voiced by Olchar Lindsann, without bells or whistles or screams or falsettos. In between the words will be silences.

Imogene Engine's writing is continually in flux, her poems are continually taken apart, recombined, re-figured, like Schwitters’ physical Merzbilder; and her life is a continuous looping through writing, they are two terms of a single movement, diastole and systole. Her work has been a lynchpin of Post-Neo publications and events since the beginning, from her contributions to the first issue of the Appropriated Press way back in early A.Da. 87 (2003), to her long poem The Iuk Kide published by mOnocle-Lash earlier this year; and she her influence on Post-Neo poetics--especially the work of Olchar Lindsann--is inestimable. Her manuscripts, notes, and objects will be floating around the room along with her words.

And finally, after a period of spontaneous silence and a period of the focused and subtle voice, we can sit back and let something return, perhaps an equallibrium, and hang out and act like human beings once again.

FIDDLESTICKS FLYERS

One other thing--there will be other flyers being made for this show as well, just as there were three for the first version of the exhibition. By the end of the series there should be dozens! We also invite all of YOU to make flyers for any or all of the shows as they're announced (even after the fact, if you want) and post 'em around on walls or online; and give us some for the Post-Neo Archive, books, etc.

Excessive and absurdly aggressive flyering has been a Post-Neo staple since its very inception when Dave Hartke, Aaron Andrews and I made seven or eight different flyers for the first Post-Neo show, RE:PETE:THE NOVEL:THE EXHIBITION as part of a complex and protacted publicity campaign. Let's keep the flyers coming! For your own show, someone else's, whether you're in New Jersey or on the other side of the world, whether you have any clue who these people are or not!

And make sure to POST THEM ON THIS BLOG TOO!!!

FIDDLESTICKS!!! #2- T. Berg, A. Lennard, A. Reed, C. Whalen

This weekend the FIDDLESTICKS Perpetual Exhibition will receive its first re-writing as the second group of artists moves their work into the space:

TSUBASA BERG (New Brunswick), proprietor of the Lost & Found Gallery, and source of many of the wonderful photos on this blog and elsewhere; ANGEE LENNARD (Chicago), heart of the Spudnik Press printing space and imprint, creator of the Mossdale Estate series, and carer for the elderly; ALAN REED (Quebec), semiotician and writer in all senses of that word, beyond those of theatre-maker, poet, novelist, and theorist; and CHARLOTTE WHALEN (New Brunswick), photographer and the Danton of last year's student revolt at the school of art at Rutgers University.

THERE WILL BE TWO EVENTS THIS SATURDAY in conjunction with the show: This new embodiment of the FIDDLESTICKS show will open at 5:00 PM this Saturday, March 8th, at the Lost & Found Gallery, 2nd floor of CSB, 33 Livingston, New Brunswick. There we shall all pitch in on a workshop-surgery to SAVE HECTOR CLAM and other of our rubber friends after the carnage at last Saturday's Bosch on Ice (more reports on that on their way--see the next post).
THEN
at 8:00 PM the same night, we will RECONVENE at our place-- 221 Howard St., 3rd Floor, entrance in the rear--for a SILENT SOIREE which shall culminate with spoken words finally materializing in the form of a set of poems by IMOGENE ENGINE (Columbus, Ohio)-- inveterate social volunteer and crypto-lyric originator of Post-Neo verse--as read in her absence by Olchar E. Lindsann.

Alan, Angee, and Imogene can't be here in person for this event, but all three have expressed an intention to visit New Brunswick for the Anti-Festival in June, so come see their work now, and meet them person (and see more work) in a few months!

More info on Saturday's events will be posted tomorrow. Unfortunately, Warren and I must both be up for work again in the morning...

Bennett Is Amazed

Yow, what madness have I unleashed in the universe! This is all wonderful horrendous amazing gruesome sublime totally outta sight and blinding! I am humbled and coruscating dripping and transpiring blinking in my flaming sweat!

I bow before you
John Bennett

the big drum in a room of 200 hundred makes you feel better about the 2 trillion

And so it starts! [as soon as I figure out how to post photos on this thing; SHOULDN'T take very long...]

And my tongue hurts. Fucking christ...

Either way, this couldn't have started without a nice ROMEO Y JULIETA, [CHURCHILL EN TUBO] from hit it big and caressing it around while apparently shredding my lungs. Apparently I was better than everyone else because of my Churchill.

DA! DA! DA!

Somewhere along the line I entered with Brad Chriss' 'Hermaphrodite' reading where he had just started Chapter [5] of blue spandex of two mates' copulation ['Copulation'] with lilac teeth? Sliding.

And then into John M. Bennett readings where things were fucking sweet. I haven't heard Brad read any Bennett before so it was interesting to see his configur/tranfor-mation. Its an interesting comparison to any of Olchar's performances since their (that of their performances') mode of existance have a harsh execution with different skins.

The stack of Bennett poems/mailings at once started a whirlpool even escaping the pool quite a bit until I got around to it... apparently translating it into this:

I remember one what told me: 'craemb'

After a few short minutes, this bastard offspring rolled around sort of unknowingly in its vile and bastard-like bowels all over the space and out the door (and up the steps, [into the elevator], down the hall, into a wooden rack, on the wall, onto a screw, back out the door, into the elevator, and up the steps, and behind the steps into the door, in reverse and eventually back into the room. When the wind cleared, you could smell the caramelized stench of a slick, roasted brut saloon. - Mmmmmmmm.

Within it, this happened (It happened.): cell phone coagulating feedback, slide whistle tails, [mike gravel], bennett, lung crackling shredding, cigars, fedoras, glass, tape, an exquisite corpse, pens, markers, people, sarah granett, tomorrow never dies, old ink, french, palindrome, a man who once drew naked in front of machines because he thought they were alive,

[a;rsogiajrja;laksjdf<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>]

Anyway, photos could do some of the approximating too.

Good Morning and Good Night.

Fry Report: Feb 22nd (Fiddlesticks One)

On Feb. 22nd Brad, Olchar and I showed up to the Lost and Found Gallery for the first Fiddlesticks show after some breakfast. Jamie Bruno was just finishing up her addition to the room and Lenny Corea had added his marks (ranks upon ranks of ink-drawn, zygote like nodules) the night before. The two had opened up the ceiling to expose the organs of the building overhead, officially breaking the seal on the Post-NeoAbsurdist Perpetual Exhibition Machine. Jamie explained the lighting they'd set up while we navigated the string bound corners of the room and examined the miniature, yarn entanglements that alighted around Lenny's ink-leavings. For some hours, between running errands and spreading the word around the building I sat and talked with Tsubasa, Olchar and Brad as he painted leg-lobed vagipenises issuing from the sides of Lenny's wall drawing. It reminded me of the days when Brad used to paint in a room adjoining our living room at our place in Columbus Ohio. Talking with Brad in this social nerve center of the household as he worked was a daily activity.

At 8:00pm after some of the first visitors arrived Brad laid into a reading of Chants de Maldoror and explained the passage's significance in terms of how Lautréamont addresses the hermaphrodite and his interest in its existence as an undecidable subject. The hermaphrodite is beaten and prayed for. More people began to arrive. Brad read two new poems from a book he made (hint hint) for the exhibition entitled hermaphrodite. The poems seemed to detail the extra-romantic encounters of some as yet unborn Post-Neo sexual (thank you Evan Damrow). By the end of his second poem the relatively structured language broke down into herky-jerky spasms of garble-words reminiscent of his Split Tongue.

With anti-gears well lubed we commenced with the John M. Bennett reading. Olchar struck first, dexterously lip-locking the words with the aplomb of an ardent Bennettere. I planted myself and let one rip. Brad fiendishly chawed another with his tell-tale jabber-shouts. We handed the poems around to the gathered visitors giving everyone a chance to put down their noisemaker and operate one of John's phonetic jungle gyms. Tomislav V. Butkovic interpreted a poem using a slide-whistle. Olchar read a poem torn in half. Brad and I read a poem backwards. Jamie, who couldn't be there that night, read poems over the speaker on a cellphone generously loaned to us by Kate Illes. Lenny Corea, Megan Blafas, Steve Dolnack, and Andy Wolf also contributed their own distinct interpretations. As the tempo grew John's poems began intermixing with randomly derived performo-vocal exchanges between veterans of brute salon and PNA-New Jersey soirées. This resulted in noisemaker sculpture, free-style conversations in Bennett inspired tongues, and the random interspersing of 'vim's, 'barr's, 'blit's, 'the shirt's, 'vom's, 'blat's, 'the sheet's, and 'anti's within and around the poems.

Stay tuned for more images and video detailing Fiddlesticks: A Post-Neoabsurdist Perpetual Exhibition Machine's second escapade which includes work by Alan Reed, Charlotte Whalen, Angie Lennard, and Tsubasa Berg. We're planning a 'Familiar Hospital' event to coincide with the opening; Hector Clam is in critical condition after injuries sustained at last night's Bosche on Ice (more on this later) and most of you've heard of Professor Aristotle's continuing struggle with neck-leprosy. The evening will be capped off off with a Silent Soirée at our apartment leading into Olchar's reading of poems by Imogene Engine.

Olchar's Report on the Chriss/Bennett Reading

The FIDDLESTICKS exhibition, a three-month show at the Lost & Found Gallery leading up to the Anti-Festival in June, opened last Saturday with work by Bradley Chriss, Lenny Corea, and Jamie Bruno. Photos and a video of what they did with the space are posted below, Lenny's vaguely Cthuloid clusters of phalluses wrapping around the wall, merging into Brad's choratic and androgenous prima materia, with Jamie's string angling across the space, slicing off the corners, and wrapping itself around the appendages of Lenny's drawing.

At 8:00 the series kicked off with a reading by Chriss, followed by a reading by all of us of poems by John M. Bennett. Here's my own report of the event, hopefully other people who were there/involved will post their own too.

Brad's reading, formulated around the notion of the Hermaphrodite, moved back and forth between his thoughts on the hermaphrodite as a figure, and his poems in which he engages with it. He started out with a reading of the chapter on the hermaphrodite from Lautréamont's Chants de Maldoror (Book II, Strophe 7), which certainly made my fucking day at the very least. As the chapter progressed, his rhythms and cadences began to subtly disrupt the text, they developed their own ebb and flow that worked independently of the grammar and sense of the passage. It's the first time I've heard someone other than myself voice this seminal text, and it was nice seeing this gesture of turning back to examine this tradition that he (and we all) are continuing, so that we can all take a measure of both how an Anti-Tradition has developed and changed, and also of the continual projects and concerns that we share with our counterparts 150 years ago... Brad then read two other poems on the hermaphrodite from his book-in-progress, hermaphrodite. These poems are quite a bit more constrained and refined than his earlier stuff (formally at least; in most other ways they're still pretty, mm, balls-out shall we say?) and his reading was more restrained as well, which (as a kind of microcosm of the progress of his set as a whole) made the final, a-semic strophe of the second poem that much more effective as it broke apart into rhythmic phonetics.

Which led us right into the Bennett reading.

We began with the (by now ritual) Distribution of the Noise-Makers. Warren, Brad, Tomislav Butković, and myself planned to take turns reading at random from a stack of Bennett poems to the accompaniment of everyone else--we had La M al, Sound Dirt, Cantar del Huff, Backwords (Quite a bit of Konstelanetz got read somewhere during the evening as well, an interesting added dimension of a joint endeavour on that book's model), and a thick sheaf of printouts of recent poems, especially from John's Globbolalia series. We would offer the opportunity to any of our guests to come up and give it a go themselves. As so often happens with New Jersey Post-Neo crowds, their energy was too restless to allow anything so straightforward to proceed. After several poems, Brad sent a stack of poems around the room, forcing everybody to step into John's linguistic world at least once. As the texts began to crisscross the room, there would sometimes be a couple going at once, sometimes read intentionally as simultaneous poems and sometimes nearly oblivious to each other; an impromptu assemblage grew out of the floor, and it took on the quality of a Brute Salon (the gatherings of collective automatism that have been going on intermittently in New Brunswick for the last couple of years), though the spine of Bennett's texts being read--sometimes as the centre of activity, sometimes on the periphery--provided a textual and (a-)linguistic continuity. Not what we had expected or planned, but it is nice to be surprised by your friends sometimes. Whenever new people showed up they were commanded to perform duets with us--Lenny, Andy Wolf, Megan Blafas when she arrived from Washington at the height of the thing. Jamie was unable to attend the event in person, so she called in to a speaker phone lent to us by the audience and belted out some Bennett poems from a bathroom stall someplace for about 15 minutes. (a side-note: as it happens, the set of Bennett poems performed by David Beris Edwards and I at the Anti-Festival in England a year and a half ago also took place in the toilet.) The phone sparked off some other ideas and Steve Dolnack started playing feedback produced by playing two cell phones off each other. At this point precise memories begin to fail me, perhaps other people can fill you in, but--eventually it all ended, apparently, everyone very kindly pitched in cleaning the place up, and a group of us went out and got pizza, then back home for further refreshments.

There will be some photos and video posted as soon as possible; we've got a pretty driving schedule here but we're getting everything up as quickly as possible.

This weekend--in fact later today--is BOSCH ON ICE, organised by Tom Russotti, which we'll get reports up on as well once we can do so; and the following weekend FIDDLESTICKS will undergo its first metamorphosis as Tsubasa Berg (New Brunswick), Alan Reed (Quebec), Charlotte Whalen (New Brunswick), and Angee Lennard (Chicago) move their stuff in; celebrated by (among other things) a Silent Soiree (this idea's been in the air for a long time) and a reading by myself (Olchar) of poems by the Ohio Post-Neo, Imogene Engine.

Here are a few photos of the John M.Bennett reading at the Lost & Found Gallery, taken by Tsubasa Berg and other people as the camera was passed around. We'll get some video up presently as well, and a flickr account with more photos.

Lost & Found Gallery

Video of the Fiddlesticks exhibition in its first form.

FIDDLESTICKS!!! #1- J. Bruno, B. Chriss, L. Corea

A set of photos from this first incarnation of the Fiddlesticks exhibition at the Lost & Found Gallery, by Lenny Corea, Jamie Bruno, and Bradley Chriss. The show kicked off on Saturday with readings of poems by Chriss and John M. Bennett; photos and video of that event will be posted within a day or two.
